Kahoot!

 4.5/5 (1)

Kahoot! is a multiple-choice assessment tool where students compete against each other to win points based on how fast they select the correct answer. https://kahoot.com/

Full Description

Kahoot is a fun, free learning app, available on computers, tablet's, iPad's, and cell phones (both iOS and Android), that is both entertaining and effective for teachers and students. Kahoot is used as a enjoyable way of teaching and assessing students, allowing them to challenge themselves, while also engaging and celebrating with peers within the classroom.

How it works:
In a multiple choice format, teachers create questions of their own that surround the lessons and subjects taught within the classroom. Choosing the number of questions, as well as the display of the game, teachers can also add additional images, videos and diagrams that are useful within the assessment. After the game has been created, the teacher displays the game in front of the classroom and gives each student a game pin to allow access to each of the students on their own individual device. Once the students have all entered the game, they are then allowed to create a name that will be used to keep track of progress and scores within the game. Each question is given with four answer choices, marked by a different color and shape, once the students read the displayed question, they are to choose the correct choice answer. Scores are combined by whether the answer is correct or not, as well as the speed of how quickly the correct answer is chosen. After all students have given their answers, the scores are calculated per question and the students can see their ranking amongst their other peers. Once all the questions are answered, the final rankings for the questions are displayed and the students are able to see who has won!

Pros:
- The game allows for students to enjoy some fun competition amongst their peer students, encouraging engagement and activity within the classroom.
- Teachers are able to use the game as a form of assessment. Each question demonstrates the number of correct responses verse incorrect assessments, allowing teacher to reflect on what areas of the lesson the students are comfortable and understanding or those that still are not completely being retained/understood.
- The format of the app allows of the game to be a frequently used activity in the classroom. Because teachers can constantly create different games, surrounding different subjects within the classroom, the app can continuously be used at different points within the school year.
- Teachers can use other shared games/questions that other teachers have created.
- The Challenge Feature- the mobile app feature that allows students to play the kahoot game for their classroom from home! This feature can be used as a form of homework, that allows students to reinforce what they have learned at home. Also, within the challenge feature teachers can see progress reports, allowing an analysis of how the students did within the assessment.

Cons:
- The app relies on the use of technology. Therefore, unfortuantely if technology is not available in the school community, the app would not be available/useful for the classroom.
- Students sometimes get distracted and hyper - May be best to play at the end of class.
- There is no way to monitor each student's device, so instead of playing along with the game, some students may use their device to do other things while the game is going on.

Kahoot allows for classrooms of all different ages and levels, to integrate technology into the classroom structure, ultimately encouraging activity, engagement, challenge and enthusiasm. It also allows teachers the ability to understand his/her students progress through assessment. Kahoot encourages teachers to step away from the sole focus of textbook and lecture style of teaching and instead jump into the world of technological education!

I highly recommend using Kahoot! in your classroom as a multiple-choice formative assessment. My students enjoy the game show format and competing for the top spot. I can also export results to a spreadsheet to review which questions students had trouble with. While the multiple-choice format does limit the types of questions you can ask, there is no better tool (in my opinion) for what Kahoot! can do.
